Half a day in Kochkor: a cooperative of shyrdak makers, the Sunday livestock bazaar and a lunch we cook together with the hostess.

Kochkor is the capital of Kyrgyz felt. We start at a cooperative where women from nearby villages make shyrdaks and ala-kiyiz. A craftswoman shows the whole process, from shearing the wool to the finished carpet, and you try making felt yourself. On Sundays we stop by the livestock bazaar, a noisy spectacle where sheep, horses and yaks are sold. Then we visit my aunt: together we make manty, fry boorsok and drink tea with kaymak and jam. A great programme before a horseback tour or as a stop on the way to Son-Kul.
