Seven hours on enduro bikes along dirt roads and mountain trails around Karakol: river fords, a climb to the pastures and lunch with herders on the jailoo.

The foothills of the Terskey Ala-Too range around Karakol are a network of old geological roads, shepherds' trails and fords. On a light enduro bike it is the best way to see the jailoo — summer pastures that cars cannot reach. After a briefing and a trial lap on the practice ground we head into the mountains. The route is about 80 km: dirt roads through apple orchards, a climb to the pastures at 2,800 m and a couple of fords across mountain rivers. Lunch is in a herders' yurt — shorpo, flatbread and kymyz. The guide sets the pace for the least experienced rider in the group. The bikes are Honda CRF 250s in good condition, with a full set of protective gear.
