Kochkor, Son-Kul
Three days on horseback over the Kyzart pass to high-altitude Son-Kul, nights in herders' yurts and sunset over the lake at 3,000 m.
I have been leading this route for twelve years, and it is still my favourite. We drive from Kochkor to Kyzart village, saddle the horses and climb through meadows and spruce groves to the pass. By the evening of the first day a view opens onto a valley where herds of horses graze, and we spend the night in a yurt with a family I know. On the second day we descend to Son-Kul. The lake is huge and almost empty: only yurts, horses and clouds reflected in the water. In the evening you can try kymyz, help the hostess with dinner and look at stars you never see in the city. No riding experience is needed: the horses are calm, and I give a briefing before we set off. The pace is easy, 5–6 hours in the saddle a day with stops for tea and lunch.
Day 1
Kochkor — Kyzart — the pass
Transfer to Kyzart, meeting the horses, climb to the Kyzart pass. Night in a yurt on the jailoo.
Day 2

Day 3
Son-Kul — Kochkor
Morning ride along the shore, return to Kyzart on horseback and transfer to Kochkor.

Best three days of our whole trip. Azamat picked calm horses for us complete beginners and by day two we were actually enjoying the ride. The night in the shepherds' yurt, with fresh bread and kymyz we didn't quite get used to, was unforgettable. It was colder than expected at the lake, so bring a proper jacket.
